Why start about three months ahead

Both eggs and sperm take roughly 90 days to mature, so the choices you make in the three months before trying can shape the quality of the egg and sperm that go on to make a baby. Starting early also gives time for a daily folic acid supplement to build up, for any vaccinations to take effect, and for lifestyle changes to settle in before conception.

What both partners can work through

Preconception health is a team effort. This checklist covers the essentials for each partner:

  • Daily folic acid (about 400 micrograms) for the partner trying to conceive
  • A preconception check-up and review of any long-term conditions or medications
  • Confirming immunity to rubella and being up to date on vaccinations
  • Reducing alcohol, stopping smoking, limiting caffeine, and a dental check
  • Moving toward a healthy weight and regular activity for both partners

When you are ready, gauge where you stand with the TTC readiness score and read when to seek help. This checklist is general guidance, not personalised medical advice.
