IVF Cost in India: What to Budget and Questions to Ask

IVF costs in India vary widely by city, clinic, and what your cycle needs. A single cycle commonly runs from the low lakhs upward — but medicines, add-ons, and repeat cycles add significantly. Treat any figure you see as approximate, and always get a written estimate from your own clinic.
What's usually included
- Consultation and baseline testing
- Stimulation injections and monitoring scans
- Egg retrieval and anaesthesia
- Lab fertilisation and embryo culture
- Embryo transfer
Common extra costs
- ICSI (sperm injected into egg)
- Embryo freezing and storage
- Genetic testing (PGT)
- Donor eggs or sperm
- Second and third cycles
Why costs vary so much
Two couples at two clinics can pay very different amounts. The medication dose depends on your body's response and is a large, variable part of the bill. Metro-city clinics often cost more than smaller towns. Add-ons like ICSI, embryo freezing and genetic testing, the number of cycles you need, and whether you use donor eggs or sperm all move the total up or down. Because of this, a single headline price is rarely the amount you actually pay.
Planning and budgeting
Budget for more than one cycle rather than assuming the first will work, and set aside a buffer for medicines and add-ons that may not be in the base package. Ask whether the clinic offers multi-cycle packages, EMI options, or refund programmes, and check what your health insurance and any government schemes cover before you commit.
Questions to ask
Request an itemised, all-in estimate for one full cycle. Ask what's excluded, what happens if the cycle is cancelled, and whether packages cover repeat attempts. Compare live-birth rates for your age — not just price.
When to speak to a doctor
Before focusing on cost, see a fertility specialist to confirm whether IVF is the right treatment for you — simpler, cheaper options such as ovulation induction or IUI may be tried first. A specialist can also tell you roughly how many cycles you might realistically need, which matters far more for budgeting than any single-cycle price.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a clinic on price alone rather than success rates for your age
- Budgeting for one cycle when more than one is often needed
- Overlooking medicine, freezing and testing costs in the 'package' price
- Not asking what happens, financially, if a cycle is cancelled
