Aim to have your hospital bag ready by around week 36 — babies don't always wait for the due date. Here's a practical, no-stress checklist of what's genuinely useful, so you can pack once and forget about it.
For you (mum)
Maternity / postpartum pads
You'll need heavy-flow, extra-long pads for after birth — far more absorbent than regular ones. Pack a pack or two.
Typical range: ₹200 – ₹600
Nursing bras
Soft, wireless nursing bras make early feeds and night-time much easier. Two or three see you through.
Typical range: ₹500 – ₹1,500
Comfortable nightwear / feeding robe
Loose, front-open nightwear is comfortable post-birth and makes skin-to-skin and feeding simple.
Typical range: ₹600 – ₹2,000
Nipple cream
A lanolin or plant-based nipple cream soothes the first tender days of feeding. Small tube, big relief.
Typical range: ₹250 – ₹700
Toiletries & long phone charger
Travel toiletries, lip balm, hair ties — and an extra-long charging cable, because hospital sockets are never close to the bed.
Typical range: ₹300 – ₹900
For baby
Newborn going-home outfit + mittens & cap
One soft outfit, a cap, mittens, and socks for the trip home. Pack a couple of sizes — you won't know baby's size yet.
Typical range: ₹400 – ₹1,200
Swaddle / receiving blankets
Two soft swaddles keep baby warm and snug for the journey and those first photos.
Typical range: ₹500 – ₹1,200
Newborn diapers & sensitive wipes
A small pack of each gets you through the hospital stay before your main stash at home.
Typical range: ₹300 – ₹900
Infant car seat (for the ride home)
Most hospitals won't let you leave by car without one. Install and practise the buckles before the big day.
Typical range: ₹4,000 – ₹15,000
Don't forget
- ID, insurance papers, and your maternity notes / reports.
- Snacks and a refillable water bottle for during and after labour.
- A going-home outfit for you (loose and comfortable).
- A small bag for your partner — snacks, charger, change of clothes.
