Movements are getting stronger and more regular. After the big scan week, pregnancy often settles into a rhythm where movement becomes the most exciting part of daily life.
The baby is practising swallowing, digesting tiny amounts of amniotic fluid, and moving with more force and coordination. Eyebrows and eyelids are more defined, and the body is beginning to look increasingly newborn-like.
A playful size comparison for this week is carrot. That carrot-sized baby is long, active, and becoming easier to imagine as a tiny person.
You may feel the bump sitting higher now, with more pressure through the back or sides after busy days. Movement can start feeling less like random flutters and more like clear taps or rolls.
Week 21 may bring stronger kicks, heartburn, backache, Braxton Hicks twinges, increased appetite, and trouble getting comfortable in one position for too long. Mild swelling can also begin after long standing.
Regular meals matter now because your appetite may increase and long gaps can leave you shaky or refluxy. Pair grains with protein, include vegetables often, and keep an eye on calcium and iron-rich staples.
Walking, prenatal yoga, and mobility work for the back and hips can make everyday movement easier. If swelling starts after long workdays, short movement breaks are more helpful than trying to be stoic.
The baby's movements can be deeply reassuring, but they can also make you more emotionally attached and therefore more easily worried. That is a very human trade-off.
Partners can place a hand on the bump and share in the new rhythm if you are ready for that. Feeling movement together can make pregnancy feel more mutual and immediate.
Urgent warning signs this week include heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, fainting, leaking fluid, or a severe headache with vision changes. Call if you have painful contractions, bleeding, leaking fluid, or sudden reduced movement after you have been consistently feeling the baby.
Sometimes yes, especially if the baby is active and the placenta is not cushioning the front of the uterus. It may still be inconsistent for a while.
Notice your baby's pattern of kicks and quiet times. Start noticing your baby's busy times without obsessing; simple familiarity now can build confidence later.
