Reflexes are developing; the riskiest early phase is easing. Week 12 is a landmark week because dating or nuchal scans often happen around now, and many parents finally get a fuller glimpse of the baby on screen.
Reflexes are developing, fingers can open and close, and facial features are becoming much clearer. The placenta is taking over more hormonal work, which is one reason some early symptoms may begin easing soon.
A playful size comparison for this week is lime. That lime-sized baby can already stretch, kick, and show a far more recognisable shape on scan.
Your uterus is rising out of the pelvis, and that can make the lower abdomen feel fuller or firmer. Some people notice nausea easing now, while others still feel very much in the thick of it.
Nausea, fatigue, bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, and occasional dizziness can all still appear in week 12. At the same time, some people experience a welcome dip in queasiness or a slight return of appetite.
As appetite returns, aim to rebuild balanced meals instead of living only on survival foods. Add back vegetables, fruit, lentils, eggs, dairy or fortified alternatives, and enough water to help digestion recover too.
Movement often starts feeling more doable now, especially walking, stretching, and prenatal yoga. Ease back in gradually rather than assuming you should bounce straight to your old pace.
A reassuring scan can feel wonderful, but it does not automatically switch worry off. Many parents feel relief mixed with fresh attachment, which can make everything feel more vulnerable too.
Partners can be especially present at scans and appointments this week, helping remember questions and making space for whatever emotions come up after. Even good news can feel intense.
Urgent warning signs this week include heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, fainting, leaking fluid, or a severe headache with vision changes. Call for heavy bleeding, severe cramps, fever, or sudden concerning symptoms after a scan, even if the appointment itself felt reassuring.
The scan often confirms dates, heartbeat, number of babies, and general early development. Some clinics also include measurements used in screening tests.
Many people share their news around now, but there's no rush. If you have a scan this week, jot down what you want to remember afterwards because emotions can blur the details quickly.
